Extracted from a paper entitled “Footprint Area Calculations for New Central School, Pre-bond referendum” by Carol Phillips, civil engineer:

"These calculations show that the architect's sketch of the school was drawn so small prior to the bond referendum that voters could not get a realistic impression of what the school and grounds would look like. The new school, which will serve twice as many students, was shown with a footprint of only about 8% larger than that of the existing school (see note 1 below). It would have needed to be at least five stories high to provide the 80,000 square feet anticipated (see note 2). Although detailed drawings were not expected in the early conceptual design phase, drawings should have been realistic enough for voters to make an informed decision. Had the architect drawn the new school twice the size of the old school, since it is intended to serve twice as many students, voters would have known that there really wasn't enough room to replace existing ball fields, there wasn't room for district offices, and it exceeded zoning regulations.”
